11.8.06...Off-campus Ohio University students to help community members in need..ATHENS, Ohio (Nov. 8, 2006) - Ohio University students living off-campus will have the opportunity to empty their cupboards and pantries for a good cause when the Off-Campus Community Assistants will collect non-perishable food items from student residents and community members living in the off-campus community Wednesday, Nov. 15. The food items will be donated to the Athens Food Pantry. ..?This project was conceptualized and organized by students and has the potential to be one of the largest community service projects accomplished at Ohio University,? said Kevin Smith, graduate assistant for Off-Campus Living. ?Best of all, this project will benefit the Athens Food Pantry and those people whom the food pantry seek to assist.?..The Community Assistant program is now in its second year at Ohio University and consists of 15 undergraduate students who live throughout the off-campus area. These students serve as peer educators, liaisons between the students and the university, as well as information providers and potential problem-solvers for off-campus students who otherwise have no direct outlet for their concerns. ..?This is a chance for off-campus students to show Athens residents that we truly care about our community? said Community Assistant Student Coordinator Meg Alexander. ..On Nov. 15, each street's community assistant will go door-to-door distributing paper grocery bags to collect any non-perishable food items. Additionally, students may plan ahead and register their contribution and/or their assistance in the collection process at: total of $400 in prizes will be awarded to those students who donate the most non-perishable food items. ..This community-building project is being sponsored in part by Off-Campus Living and with assistance from Skippers Bar & Grill, 7 Sauces and the Blue Gator restaurants. ..Note to media: T
